It’s not easy being beautiful. Between what you spend on makeup, the salon trips for hair and nails, and your monthly gym payment, the money that maintains your look can add up.

Thankfully, there are plenty of beauty hacks out there to help offset the costs. Some may take a little more time or creativity than normal. But, this is much easier on your wallet, allowing you to do more of the things you actually enjoy while looking fabulous.

Here are the top ten DIY beauty tips and tricks to try out this year.

1. Use Mascara as Eyeliner

Tired of spending so much money on various colors of mascaras and liners?

You can buy one of each color of mascara and get the perfect lines you need, too. Just make sure you have a liner brush lying around to help you achieve this look.

All you need to do is take your mascara brush out and wipe your liner brush along the wand. This will color the liner brush well enough for you to paint on your lovely lines and look as beautiful as ever.

2. Make Your Own Gel Liner

If you’re looking for some other beauty hacks to make your eye makeup stretch a little further, try making your own gel liner.

Every glam gal knows that gel liner lasts longer than a traditional pencil. However, the extra time usually comes at an extra price. Not anymore!

Next time you’re looking to buy eyeliner, opt for the cheaper pencil kind. Then, heat up your pencil with a lighter when you’re getting ready. Do this first, as you will need about 10-15 minutes to let the liner cool down.

Once it’s ready, apply, style, and shade. It is that simple to get a stellar look at an even better price.

3. Swap Fake Lashes for Baby Powder Lashes

No matter the kind or color of a liner, some girls swear by the power of fake lashes. If you’re the girl who wears her lashes every weekend, though, you’re spending more than you need to.

Stop buying fake lashes and get a pot of baby powder and a box of cotton swabs instead. Wait – what? We know this sounds crazy, but just hear us out.

Dip a cotton swab into the baby powder and run it across your lashes after the first coat of mascara. Go back over the powder and first coat with a second layer. This layer will stick to the baby powder and create a longer, fuller look.

4. Make Your Own Dry Shampoo

If you like the thought of using baby powder for beauty hacks, you’re going to love what you can do with things like baking soda or cornstarch. These two common kitchen tools are great for DIY ideas around the house.

When it comes to your style kit, cornstarch is a must for the ultimate, easiest dry shampoo you’ve ever had. Using a powder dry shampoo instead of a spray allows this product to absorb dirt and oil as best as possible.

Plus, you get the look you want without the tight, hairspray-like feeling of traditional dry shampoos! To make this happen, you will need:

  • cornstarch
  • rice flour
  • arrowroot powder
  • essential oils of your choosing

Mix two tablespoons of all the powders together. Toss them around to make sure everything is blended well, then add 5-10 drops of the essential oil you want.

When it’s time to apply, dump a bit of this mixture into one palm. Flip your head over and rub the powder together, then rub your scalp with your hands. The powder will transfer into your hair and make it look good as new.

5. Cut Your Own Split Ends

Speaking of making your hair look as great as it can, let’s talk about split ends.

You don’t have to go to the salon every time you need a trim anymore. All you need is a bit of extra time at home, some hair clips or ties, and a nice, clean pair of scissors.

Begin by separating your hair into sections. You can do this from the top, middle, and bottom layers, or from left to right. Either way, make sure you give yourself enough room to work through each section carefully.

Take a small bundle of hair at a time and twist it. The more you twist, the more you should see your split ends pop out. Carefully run your scissors along the edge of the twist, cutting only what is sticking out.

Repeat this through all of your sections. Then, take your hair down and see the difference! This is one of the more time-consuming beauty hacks on the list, but it can also be one of the most money-saving.

Try to keep your salon visits to a minimum while you’re working on saving for that dream vacation or fixing your credit. To speed things along, talk to professionals like those at Bonsai Finance.

6. Do Your Own Nails

Salon spending alone contributes to most of what a lady spends on beauty expenses each year. Just imagine how many lip kits or contour pallets you could buy with all those appointments!

Even out your beauty spending with these two manicure beauty hacks.

Easy French Nails

Want to know the secret to getting the perfect line for a French manicure? Use tape!

Apply a piece of tape to the bottom part of your nail, where you’d like your line to end. Then, coat the exposed, top part of your nail with confidence. You can paint with ease and get the perfect line in half the time.

Not to mention, you can do it all on your own.

At-Home Gel Manicures

You don’t need fancy machines to get a long-lasting gel manicure. You can buy a basic gel manicure light at a beauty supply store, where some other beauty hacks are easy to find.

Or, just get a bottom and top layer of gel. Apply the base layer, blow on it, then add your favorite manicure color. This doesn’t have to be gel because your top layer will be strong enough to hold everything.

Apply the top layer, then let it dry under the light you’ve purchased. If you want to save even more money, use a blow dryer instead.

7. Make Your Own Bronzer Blend

Remember that cornstarch you bought for your dry shampoo? You can use it for makeup beauty hacks, too!

The easiest of which is creating the perfect bronzer for your skin type. Simply start with a few tablespoons of cornstarch and add a bit of cocoa, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Mix each powder depending on how dark you want your bronzer to be. Lighter shades can add extra cornstarch to balance everything out, while darker-skinned ladies can go heavy on the cocoa or cinnamon.

8. Create a Low-Cost Lip Stain

If you’re the girl who loves trying fun, new lip colors, put this trick at the top of your beauty hacks list. Instead of going to the makeup store for expensive tubes of lipstick you’ll probably never finish, go to the grocery store instead.

Pick up packs of Kool-Aid that come in colors you’d love to wear on your lips. Remember how too much of this drink used to stain your lips as a kid? Now, you can simply empty out the packet and dab it onto your lips for a more refined version of this effect.

Try playing with two different colors or try on each one until you find your favorite. Either way, you’ll have a long-term, low-cost lip supply for every occasion.

9. Contour Correctly

The tricky thing about different lipsticks is how easy the tubes are to lose! This is part of the reason you can end up spending so much on lip colors. When it comes to contour creams, though, you usually spend a lot on these things because you use them too much.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to minimize your bold cheeks or defined jawlines. You just have to know how to get these looks without wasting your contouring kit.

One easy trick to keep in mind is the rule of three. Apply your contour cream in the shape of a three from above your brows to the jawline.

Or, look up videos from fashion vloggers on how to get the most out of these tiny little tubes. You’ll be surprised how much longer you can make one purchase stretch!

10. Mix Your Own Face Masks

Whether you’re playing with DIY lip stains or new ways to apply eyeliner, you’re going to need to take everything off at some point. Stock up on your favorite face wipes, but don’t forget to take a little extra care of your skin from time to time.

You can easily do this without spending too much money.

DIY face masks are often made out of things you find in your kitchen on a normal basis. Some of our favorite versions include:

  • honey and salt
  • mashed banana, ground oats, and honey
  • coffee grounds, honey, and salt
  • mashed papaya, sugar, and yogurt

It might sound strange to put some of these things on your face, but they can work wonders. Try one out and see for yourself!
