You got your dream job! Congratulations! You rocked the interview, and all that’s left is your drug test.
Wait! What? But what about the joint you hit last weekend?
You don’t want to jeopardize your future with a failed drug test, but missing out on this job is not an option.
Don’t panic. Whether you are a heavy or occasional weed user, there are some easy steps you can take to pass a drug test.
Want to know how to pass a drug test? Read on to find out.
1. Find Out What Type of Drug Test You’ll be Taking
There are a few types of drug tests that can be used for employment drug screenings. The most popular, by far, is the urine analysis.
Certain employers will require a different type of drug test. Although less popular, blood tests, hair tests, and saliva testing are used as well.
It’s extremely important that you find out what type of drug test you’ll be taking.
You won’t wave any red flags by asking your interviewer what the drug test process is like. Some places will test you in their own facility, but many will send you to a third party drug testing company for your appointment and analysis.
Each type of test has different detection times. For example, if they simply swab your mouth (saliva test), that usually only tests for drug use in the previous four to six hours.
The hair test, on the other hand, can detect drug use over a long period of time. They clip a small portion near the top of your head to test for drug use over the span of the last few months.
Tempted to shave your head? Don’t bother, they’ll get it from somewhere else.
Again, the most common is the urine analysis test, and that’s really what we’ll cover here.
What Types of Drugs Will You Be Tested for?
Another essential aspect of preparing for your drug test is finding out what exactly you will be tested for.
Most tests will check for marijuana (yes, flower, edibles, tinctures), cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, MDMA, and a variety of other psychoactive and illegal drugs.
If you’re on a medication, the test will likely show that as well. Simply let the interviewer know about it. Unfortunately, this doesn’t necessarily stand true for marijuana prescribed in legal states (but check your future employer’s policy just in case).
2. Just Don’t Risk It
If you’re applying to full-time positions, know that there’s always a possibility of the company having a drug test.
We don’t want to state the obvious here, but just don’t smoke marijuana for a bit if you know this going in. It will save you a lot of stress and you will be sure that you’ll pass.

3. Understand How Long Marijuana Stays in Your System
After you find out the type of drug test, try to remember when was the last you used illegal substances. You may want to book your drug test as far away in your calendar as you’re able to.
Each drug has a different detection period in the body. Drugs like amphetamines will stay in your system for two to four days, while marijuana can be detected within one to 30 days after use.
Find out how long each substance will stay in your system – aka the detection period. Know that if you’re a heavy user, the drugs can stay in your system longer than this.
4. How to Pass a Drug Test – Know Your Options
When you look up how to pass a drug test, there are a lot of products on the market that claim they will help you cleanse, or that they can actually replace your urine. It’s essential to figure out what your approach here is going to be.
Dilution is when you dilute your actual sample with either water or a product “made for dilution.”
Basically, you mix your urine with something that isn’t urine. This is detectable and a risky move when you are approaching your dream job.
Just drinking a ton of water with vinegar or pure cranberry juice may work if you have a lot of time on your hands, but we don’t recommend it. These tricks often don’t work.
Synthetic urine has gained popularity recently. Here is the thing, though – it can be detectable. If the solution you get is not correct or isn’t at the temperature urine should be at, it won’t work.
They’ll know you tampered with the solution, and that is a big no-no when trying to pass an employment test.
We’re not here to tell you what to do, but be careful if you’re using synthetic urine.
Borrow a Friend’s Urine
This one is old school.
Borrow a nice sample of your friend’s pee to bring to your drug test. While this isn’t as detectable as the synthetic urine, it can still be risky.
Just make sure it stays warm and that your pal’s urine is actually clean!
Detox Your Body
It can be nerve-wracking to sneak in a glass of urine or a product to dilute your own urine into a drug-testing facility.
The best option for your body is a detox. We’ve already said this before, but if you have longer than the detection window of marijuana (30 days) available before your test, give it a try. Drink a lot of water and exercise more so you can just detox naturally.
If your test is a bit sooner (and it often is), you can look at a variety of detox drinks that exist online. These are different than home remedies because they specifically aim at cleansing your body. The issue here is that you can’t trust everything you buy.
5. Take a Home Drug Test
In order to assure that you’re clean before you go to your employment drug screening, you should take a home drug test. Rapid detect tests are perfect for at home use because you can determine what you test positive for (if anything) before it’s too late.
We would recommend taking these a few times to ensure that you’re truly clean before going to your employer’s drug test. After all, you don’t want to risk that job.
