Fortunately, there are things you can do to increase your chances of hiring a nanny that both you and your kids will love! You just need to make sure you consider a few things before you start your search.

  1. Check to See How Much Experience a Nanny Has

When hiring a nanny, the first thing you want to look for is someone with enough experience on their resume.

Your background check should include:

  • A county and federal criminal check

  • A DMV check (especially if your nanny will be driving your children around)
  • A credit check
  • A drug test

Those who apply for your nanny position should be prepared to take part in each and every aspect of your background check.

If they aren’t, you should thank them for their time but tell them you would feel more comfortable interviewing candidates who are willing to divulge information about every part of themselves.

  1. Have a Nanny Tell You How They Would Respond in an Emergency

You should call each reference provided by your nanny and ask some questions to the families who worked with your nanny in the past.

Here are just a few questions you can ask to those who have experience working with the nanny you are thinking about hiring:

  1. How long did the nanny work for you?
  2. How many children did the nanny watch for you?
  3. How old were those children?
  4. What responsibilities did the nanny have?
  5. Did you ever encounter any issues while working with the nanny?
  6. Did the nanny stop working with your family on good terms?
  7. Would you work with the nanny again?

In addition to asking these kinds of questions to your nanny’s references, you should also try to confirm as many details about the nanny as you can. This way, you will be able to tell if what they have told you was truthful or not.

You can never be too careful when hiring a nanny, so do your best detective work when speaking with references and don’t leave any stone unturned as you work your way through your interviews.
