Whiten Your Teeth At Home

A 2012 survey revealed that one-third of Americans are unhappy with their smile.

Are you part of this group that would prefer a straighter, whiter smile? If so, you’re in luck. We’re sharing some of our best tips to help you get the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

Let’s get started!

Whiten Your Teeth At Home

A whiter smile will boost your confidence, make you look younger, and may even improve your chance of getting that job you’ve always wanted!

There are lots of options for whitening your teeth naturally. Listed below are some popular natural teeth whitening remedies for people who want to get a beautiful smile at home.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is on just about every healthy life hack list out there, and for good reason. It can do almost anything, including remove stains and whiten your teeth.

Because of its gritty texture, baking soda is great for scrubbing off stubborn stains from your teeth.

Simply make a paste by mixing baking soda and water, then brush it onto your teeth just like you would with toothpaste. Avoid brushing too vigorously, as this can wear down the enamel on your teeth.

Hydrogen Peroxide

You can also mix your baking soda with hydrogen peroxide for a more effective teeth-whitening experience.

Hydrogen peroxide not only helps whiten teeth, but it helps eliminate bacteria that cause bad breath and cause tooth decay and gum disease.

Mix a little bit of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide together to make a smooth paste. After brushing your teeth, rub the paste on your teeth for about 30 seconds, then rinse your mouth well with water.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another great stain remover. Some have even found that it’s just as effective as commercial products for removing dark stains.

Apple cider vinegar works so well because, at the same time that it kills bad bacteria, it also helps break down plaque and other substances that are stuck to the teeth. This, in turn, makes them appear whiter.

To use apple cider vinegar as a whitening product, simply brush a little bit of it gently onto your teeth with your finger.

Avoid brushing too vigorously (it can wear down your enamel just like baking soda. After you’ve brushed with the apple cider vinegar for about one minute, rinse your mouth out well with water.

Activated Charcoal Masks

You’ve probably heard of people using activated charcoal masks on their skin. Well, now, you can also use these masks on your teeth!

Charcoal is highly absorbent and will help pull surface stains off of the teeth.

Dentists recommend using it as a mask instead of a toothpaste because it’s very abrasive and could wear down your enamel.

Simply mix about a quarter of a tablespoon of activated charcoal with water to create a paste.

Then, apply it to your teeth and let it sit for about three minutes. Rinse with water when time’s up.

Straighten Your Teeth

Many people consider straight teeth to be an essential part of a beautiful smile. People with straighter teeth are also often considered to be more intelligent and successful.

You have two options when it comes to straightening your teeth: regular metal braces or Invisalign, which uses clear aligners to straighten the teeth in a less invasive way.

Both come with pretty significant time and financial commitments. But, if you’re serious about straightening your teeth, the costs will absolutely be worth it.

Benefits of Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are generally recommended for more complex dental issues, such as severe gaps, crooked or crowded teeth, or abnormal bites.

Some people also prefer the relative simplicity of braces. There’s no need to remember to put them in every day, and there’s no extra cleaning required outside of regular brushing and flossing.

Benefits of Invisalign

Adults with less severe orthodontic issues — a few crooked teeth or a small gap — can also benefit from Invisalign.

Invisalign are more discreet and less be painful. They also can be taken out for special occasions and, generally, don’t have to be worn as long as traditional braces.

Remember, everyone’s needs are different. Talk to an orthodontist to learn more about your options and choose the one that’s right for you.

Perform Regular Maintenance

Putting in the effort to straighten and whiten your teeth is great, but if you don’t take steps to maintain your new, beautiful smile, you’ll be back to square one before you know it.

Keep these maintenance tips in mind so that you can keep your smile looking great.

Avoid Foods that Cause Stains

To avoid restaining your teeth after whitening them, try to avoid the following foods and drinks:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Soda
  • Red wine
  • Grape or cranberry juice
  • Blueberries
  • Beets
  • Soy sauce
  • Tomato sauce

If you can’t stay away from some of those items, make sure you at least rinse your mouth out with water after eating or drinking them. You can also drink through a straw to prevent stains.

Don’t Ditch the Dentist

Make regular appointments with your dentist to get your teeth cleaned professionally.

Dentists do a more effective job of getting rid of stubborn stains, especially ones in hard-to-reach places. Most dentists recommend getting your teeth cleaned once every six months.

Avoid Smoking and Chewing Tobacco

Smoking and chewing tobacco are both known to stain your teeth.

Smoking also reduces saliva production, which, in turn, can cause tooth decay, cavities, and several other serious dental issues that won’t do your smile any favors.

Wear Your Retainers

If you’ve had your teeth professionally straightened and your orthodontist has given you a retainer, it’s important to wear it regularly. This will help prevent your teeth from shifting back into their original positions.
