The University of North Carolina recently did a study that found approximately 20% of Americans consume more than 700 calories of added sugar every day! That is an average of one cup of sugar. Added sugar by definition does not include natural sugars from whole fruits or veggies. Often time the added sugar isn’t coming from the obvious places like cookies, pies and carbonated drinks but it is disguised in packaged foods that sound healthy like yogurt, pasta sauce, and salad dressings. Some people have a sugar habit that can cause addict-like withdrawals when trying to remove it from their diet including depression, anxiety, and even headaches. No matter where you fall on the spectrum of daily sugar intake, here are some of the things you can look forward to when you stop eating added sugar.
Acne Be Gone
Are you dealing with acne that you thought would be over once you passed your teen years? Sugar might be the cause of your midlife acne breakouts. Inflammation is known to trigger acne in older adults and sugar causes inflammation. Stop drinking soda and other sweetened drinks and you may see a decrease in your breakouts. One study showed when people who do not drink sodas drank a can a day for three weeks test results showed an 87% increase in their inflammation indicators.
Avoid Type 2 Diabetes
Build up of fatty deposits around the liver result in the development of insulin resistance and decrease the effectiveness of the pancreas. Consuming added sugars create these fatty deposits. One study found that an average human eating 150 calories from added sugar are eleven times more likely to develop type two diabetes as opposed to those who consume 150 calories from protein or fats. Pack some nuts to snack on in your lunch box instead of doughnuts from the break room.
Once you’ve overcome the side effects from lowering your added sugar intake you will consistently feel better and be in a better mood. High sugar intake causes mood swings, anxiety, and irritability. If you want to increase your happiness in the long run cut out the added sugar now.

Studies have found that added sugar raises insulin to chronic levels activating the sympathetic nervous system, this then causes hypertension and increased heart rate. If you quit the sugar you will not only see your blood pressure headed in the right direction you may also see a decrease in LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

Brain fog is a known symptom of elevated sugar intake. Added sugar in your diet can slow your learning processes and interfere with memory recall. A UCLA study showed that eating excessive sugar over time can damage brain cell communication. If you want to be more attentive and accurate at work or school, lay off the sugary treats.
