Out of the almost 8 billion people in the world, 1.2 billion of those people are playing some kind of video game.

As the years keep passing, video game popularity just keeps growing, which means there is always a new game we have to catch up on.

Unfortunately, games aren’t always cheap. It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping online or waiting in lines outside stores, video games can drain our wallet pretty quickly.

The good news is there are ways to get around that. Check out these eight tricks that will help you get the best video game deals.

1. Stay Up to Date

If you don’t know when the deals are happening, you won’t be able to take advantage of them. The best way to make sure you can buy your favorite games at the cheapest prices is to stay up to date with video game deals.

Follow your favorite video game companies on social media or gamers you know post about video game deals.

Check their pages every now and then so you can find out what deals are happening when. This is a lot better than trying to search around through the internet on your own.

If you don’t want to clog up your personal social media accounts by following these people, you can always create separate accounts dedicated to finding deals.

2. Check Bargain Websites for Good Deals

These are websites that let you find all the best video game deals without all the long and difficult searching.

For example, the website Is There Any Deal looks for all the deals out there and puts them together in the same place. You can see all the different prices for certain games in various online stores and find the cheapest one.

All you have to do is search for the game you want and you can see how much you can save on each deal.

Some other good websites are CheapShark, Humble Bundle (which lets you buy a bundle of games for very cheap), and Slickdeals.

3. Put the Game in Your Cart and Ignore It

If you’re planning to buy a game from places like Amazon, you should put the game in your cart and leave it alone for a few days.

Sometimes, if you leave an item alone in your shopping cart for a few days, the store will see that you’re considering a purchase. They may add in a coupon or other deal after a few days to encourage you to buy it.

If you choose to try this method, make sure the rest of your shopping cart is empty. And remember, this is not the most reliable way to get a deal on a video game.

4. Get a Free Trail with Gamefly

If you haven’t heard of it already, Gamefly is like the Netflix for games. You can rent and buy games from all kinds of genres.

It also has a free trial that lasts an entire month. This lets you rent one game at a time. When you’re done playing the game on your top-notch BLD computer, you can either send it back to Gamefly and get another one or buy it at a discounted price.

The free trial only lasts one month though, so this is not a permanent option.

5. Take Advantage of GameStop Points

You usually get these points when after you buy a game at GameStop, but there are other ways you can get these points without purchasing a video game first.

All you have to do is sign up for the free rewards program, register your reward card at the PowerUp Rewards website, and link that to your Kongregate account.

After you do all that, you can earn a few new points every day by playing a daily Flash game. It will definitely take some time to build up enough points to buy a game, but if you’re patient, it’s a great way to get a video game for little to no money.

6. Trade in Old Games

A lot of game stores let you trade in some of your own video games to get a discount on a different game. You’ll still have to pay something, but if you have a lot of old games lying around, it’s a great way to get some money knocked off that price tag.

7. Buy Game Keys

This takes things like packing and shipping out of the purchase cost, and you can buy the keys themselves for an extremely low price. But you have to be very careful when you buy game keys.

Not all game key purchases come with downloads.

8. Wait for Video Game Deals During the Holiday Season

A lot of games get discounts during the holidays, including games on Steam. In fact, a lot of Steam games go on sale all the time, so keep an eye on the games you like.

Of course, this isn’t a for-sure option, and it does require a lot of waiting, but it is potentially one of the simplest ways to buy a discounted game. Just keep a list of all the games that have interested you throughout the year and see how many you can get when the prices go down.

This will also mean you may have to play them after everyone has already finished them. If you don’t like to wait that long, this options definitely isn’t for you. Stick to finding your games on some of those bargain websites.

Don’t Spend More Money Than You Have To

You don’t have to break the bank every time you buy a few new video games. If you shop smart and look around for the best deals, you can actually save a lot of money while still playing the games you love.

Remember to take your time and look around at different options before you buy a game. Some methods take time and patience, but if you stick to it, you’ll be playing those games in no time.
