Is your last minute move in full swing? Did your semi-rushed moving plans sneak up on you? No matter where you are in the moving process, the more money you save, the better.
Even if you’ve already signed on an expensive apartment or you’re going all the way across the country, there are other things you can do to figure out the cheapest way to move out of state.
Here are three tips to help you make it all happen for less.
1. Sell Your Stuff
Moving is a fresh start, so it kind of makes sense to sell your stuff. This gives you the chance to really create the clean slate you’re looking for. Selling your stuff means there are fewer boxes to worry about during your move and more money in your pocket before you go.
Not to mention, selling bulky items like your living room set or even your mattress could mean you don’t need as big of a moving trailer as you thought! That’s even more money saved without any extra effort.
2. Figure out the Most Cost-Effective Logistics
Speaking of having to move fewer items, think about how you plan to get from point A to point B in the first place. Even a move that’s taking you from one coast to the other could end up being more cost-effective by road instead of a plane.
If you already planned on driving one or two states over, figure out how to make the trip as cheap as possible. Book your overnight stops in hotels outside of major cities in order to save, or take shifts with other people and drive the whole route at once.
Think about what you drive, too. You may end up being able to save more by paying for professional movers and cheap car shipping than by renting a moving truck and doing everything yourself.
3. Get All the (Free) Help You Can
A fast move is already complicated enough. Don’t make it harder on yourself by taking it on alone. Call your friends and family for help and see if there’s anyone who lives near you willing to help you make the journey.
It’s not like everyone will be able to stop what they’re doing and pack up all your stuff. But, the more hands you have on deck, the better. This allows you to take care of all the packing and loading without having to pay for movers.
If you know someone with a little extra space, you can even store some of your things with them to avoid the cost of a storage unit. This allows you to focus on the basics and settle in, then start to move all your other things little by little.
The Cheapest Way to Move Out of State: Minimize Your Moving Time
Keep in mind that your time is worth more than your money, even when you need to find the cheapest way to move out of state.
No matter how tight or flexible of a moving budget you have, time is of the essence. After all, the more time you spend packing up and settling in, the less you’ll be able to focus on work and start making money again!
